Modern Kyuujinjouhoushi: The Victim

Not everyone can be a hero. Sometimes, normal people are thrust into situations that inevitably will force them to act well outside their comfort zone. Some will be cowards. Some will be heroes. And some will snap, falling into insanity, possibly even becoming the very thing chasing them. These people are victims.

And why are the in such a situation? Because no one can help. Maybe they’re alone in the woods. Perhaps its a dark and stormy night and the roads are washed out. Maybe there are no phones to call for help. Maybe those who are supposed to help are the ones doing the hurting. Maybe the help was no help at all. Maybe a loved one was a victim too and there’s a need for revenge. Maybe a loved on has gone missing and they’ve come looking for answers. Maybe its just plain foolish curiosity getting the better of them. All that matters is they are on their own and it is by their own wits that they will survive.

The Victim, much like the Average Joe, really isn’t a hero at all. Obviously, this product is about ordinary people forced into facing freakish, potentially horrific, possibly even lethal things. That in mind, we turned to the horror film genre for some proper inspiration. In a horror game, most characters won’t last long, with only one or two surviving to the very end of the scenario. Death and destruction must abound, and most especially, it must involve the players’ characters. Often, horror film victims are similar, doomed to die, but not before their specialty, gift, or talent has a chance to shine briefly. See, victims hold a special status over the general cannon fodder of a horror movie. They have some talent, skill, or ability that makes their eventual death a signature killing on the movie screen.

To that end, we’ve created the Victim, a new Basic Character Class. For starters, we already have a groundwork laid in our Modern Kyuujinjouhoushi line, the Average Joe Basic Class. The Average Joe was created to represent the ordinary blokes that weren’t quite ordinary enough to be, well, ordinary. With this fifth Basic Class, we completely remodel the concept of The Average Joe, filling it with the tropes and memes of the horror genre and turn to a few other genre-oriented OGL products for further inspiration. This class originally appeared in Shadows of Midnight: West Milford and has since been expanded.
