GM's Maps #58: Art Centre

Map making can be time-consuming and sometimes frustrating for GMs, especially GMs with limited time to begin with. In our new 'GM's Maps' range, we will be providing a range of pre-made maps for you to use in your games.

Art is often said to be what sets humanity aside from other animals. The creative impulse of humanity has brought us painting, sculpture, music, dance, drama and photography. We love to decorate our environments and for a great many people the act of creating the art is as important as the art itself.

An arts centre is a type of community centre which is specifically geared towards promoting artistic endeavours. They provide theatre space, artists studios and workshops, classrooms, display space and form a place where creative people can come tougher to create works of art and performance.

This product includes a single level Arts Centre, complete with a key and text describing what art centres are and how they differ in different parts of the world. Also, included are a selection of adventure hooks to help you drop your art centre into your campaign or build an adventure around it.

Some examples:

1/. Roger That (Post Apocalyptic)
Civilisation has been crumbling since the apocalypse. A group of survivors at the radio station have been trying to keep the airwaves alive in order to get news out to other survivors. The problem is that as some of their equipment is damaged and they can only patch it together so often. The Arts centre has at least some of what they need if they can get it. The arts centre may be overrun by zombies, creatures of the Other-Verse or other survivors. If it is in the hands of survivors, might they be willing to make a deal or will they be hostile?

2/. Art Forgery (Crime and Mystery)
An artist renting a studio in the arts centre is making forgeries. If the centre management finds out the artist will be ejected immediately. The party may be investigating the forgeries or maybe the forgers trying to avoid discovery.
Perhaps the forgery is going to be the focus of another crime, a con job perhaps and the PCs are the grifters or the marks.

3/. Windows to the World (Supernatural)
An artist working out of-the-art centre has found a way to paint pictures that can be used to transport the observer to the places in the picture.

Nice, clean and simple. Has everything you'd want for an art center. With only a few small mofifications it could easily be adapted to a primary school or recreation center. [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
