Light City #1 - The Brawler

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Welcome to Light City!

You’ve entered the capital of four-color superheroic action as governed by the excellent Swords & Wizardry Light ruleset!  There are lots of great superhero RPGs out there, and we don’t intend for Light City to overtake any of those in your gaming heart of hearts.  However, if you enjoy superheroic archetypes and the supersimplicity of SWL, you’ve come to the right place.  Here’s the first class.  We hope you enjoy your stay!

Hey, Jonathan!

I finally found L'Assemblee and bought it, hoping that a French teacher friend of mine will be willing to translate it, for a suitable compensation. I was about to try to flesh out the basic four fantasy classes to Light City on my own, so I'm hoping L'Assemblee will be a real timesaver. OR...

Eric Tenkar is soliciting content for his magazine of S&WCL, Torchlight. I don't think he would mind crossing genres to gain excellent content. You could publish LC in English there under the installment plan.

Just a thought,
Royce

Hi Royce! Thanks for reaching out! It has definitely struck me that the work of the unknown author of L'Assemblee has done a lot of heavy lifting for me if I want to get a "complete" Light City game out there. I bet even translating via Google and cleaning things up wouldn't be too terribly difficult. Man, I really have to knock out The Speedster and The Atlantean...those two would tidy things up nicely!

Torchlight is a great call, too...I saw the call and wondered if anything LC related had the legs to be interesting there.

I just changed states (geographic, not matter) and know no one other than my wife here...and have been looking for something to kickstart my brain and forge some connections to the outside world again. I think you may have just pointed me in the right direction...

Also, I'd love to see what you come up with for the fantasy classes!

I want to see what's in L'Assemblee before I try my hand at the Unique (Cleric) and the Mystery Man (Rogue). If I'm happy with that, I may or may not try to reinvent the wheel.

As for Torchlight: "Ask and it may or may not be given unto you. Don't ask and it's for sure you won't get it."

Best of luck,
Royce

I had a thought after I submitted my reply: If you get to go the Torchlight route, finish the classic four first, then go for the subclasses; Amazon, Speedster, and Atlantean. This would correspond to the 0E Whitebox model (wait, 0E didn't have a cleric). Also near and dear to my jaded old heart would be guidelines for the kid sidekick.

Good morning, Jonathan!
Being from Lousiana (misspelling deliberate) I have a nodding acquaintance with French. I've browsed through L'Assemblee and I can't identify anything corresponding to the Rogue or Cleric. Back to the old drawing board...

The Rogue / Thief in "L'Assemblée" is The Spy (L'Espion), identical to the fantasy one.
The Fighter is named Soldat (Soldier), also identical to the fantasy guy/gal (except they may own a powered armor).

I've just published "Ligh City - La Congrégation" in French, which includes :
- Magic-User : identical to the fantasy version ; I've rules that spells don't work on electronic stuff (traps, locks...)
- Cleric : also identical to the fantasy version, except the starting weapon is a badass 2-handed stick (because shield+mace is a bit old-fashioned)
- The missing Light City new classes, magical (Amazon, Angel, Cursed) and optional (Pet, Sidekick, Butler)
- Koroo ant the Black Lion
- Stardust the Super-Wizard
- A selection of 20 monsters from SWCL and Tome of Horrors Light
- Alignement rules and advice

I've somewhat outlined The Speedster in the last chapter of "L'Assemblée"...

Identical to the Elemental except :
- no flight, no elemental attack
- they have the super-CA
- they have kinetic powers (blast, etc.)

They have +1 action (attack or move) per level.
For example at level 3, they can have 3 attacks (1+2) and a double move in a given round.

I also think they should have 1d3 HTH damage and be unable to use weapons.

HEY. Y'ALL! For a really groovy trip down Memory Lane, check out Jonathan's statting of Batman '66, the late, great Adam West, at his homepage. You'll be as pleased as I was to note, I hope, that Batman's Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma surpass his Strength. Depending on how the character was played, I could see this working well in the Fabulous '30's and'40's (a very noir era in its own right) or in the modern Dark Knight era. PEACE, BABY AND KEEP 'EM FLYING!

Batman was definitely fun to stat up even with a simple class like this one...and especially a very specific incarnation of Batman! It's actually kind of difficult, though, to give him ability scores without feeling like you could be over- and underestimating his capabilities at the same time...!

It's the risk of overestimation you took that allows the Batman, as a Brawler, to also be played as the World's Greatest Detective, the possessor of such wonderful toys, and the very Night itself. In other words, you nailed it. When my 22-year-old godson read your assessment of Batman as a Brawler, he commented that the same application could be made to Christian Bale's portrayal of Batman equally well.

It might be fun to go ahead and stat all the characters from Batman '66 for Light City, but who do you use for Catwoman: Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether, or Ursula Kitt? Riddle me this: Which one could create the strongest "strange stirrings in my utility belt" or would it take a mixture of all three? MEOW!!

If only all choices could be this much fun...

If the Brawler corresponds to the Fighter, what heroes would conceivably fit the Cleric, Magic-User, and Thief classes?

I imagine there are more than four superhero core classes (especially since at this point, we have ingrained supers archetypes like the Speedster that are so darn specific!). BUT if I were breaking down a basic vigilante party that could correspond to fantasy's big four, I'd probably go with the Brawler, the Elemental (e.g. the Silver Age Human Torch, for the Magic-User), the Gifted (e.g. DC's Captain Marvel...or, Shazam if I must, for the Cleric), and let's say something like a Gadgeteer for the Thief.

Of course, Clerics, Magic-Users, and Thieves would probably fit right in here, as well...!

That kind of follows what I postulated after reading the rules for S&WL, only I had the Batman as the archtype for the Thief; Batman relies on his fighting, dexterity and ability to intimidate more than any gadget he may be packing.

I am very eagerly awaiting the full publishing of all the Light City materials. The beauty of S&WL is that all the materials needed to run a campaign over several nights with a bunch of kids in a hotel room will fit in a manilla folder; it would be nice to be able to do the same with the Supers genre as well.

Batman as the Thief works pretty well, I think. He's a tough character to fit into an archetype-based system because he's good at EVERYTHING (except chilling out), so he'd probably have to just be based on whichever aspect you'd want to highlight the most (fighting ability, wonderful toys, detective skills). (For whatever it's worth, I think of Ted Kord as probably the quintessential Gadgeteer in comics...)

I hope to have a second Light City installment up for perusal very soon!

Or Merry, Girl of a Thousand Gimmicks. For the Modern Age, it might be a toss-up between Iron Man and Booster Gold.

As for more Light City installments, I can't wait, Jonathan; I say again, I can't wait.

To date there's only been one game, H&H, that was designed from the ground up as a Supers game for the Golden Age. It was designed to emulate D&D White Box and, like 0e D&D, soon spawned a line of Companion booklets. All this is fine, but as I said above, I think something that will fit in a manila envelope is needed and would be appreciated. After that, just throw a d6 and a d20 in your pocket and you're ready to go.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
