The Toxic Bag Dark Eye Kickstarter Collection for Aventuria Almanac!

When Ulisses Spiele launched the Kickstarter for the Aventuria Almanac, the essential sourcebook for Dark Eye, they asked us to contribute a sound effects collection for their backers, specifically curated for the Dark Eye game. The campaign was phenomenally successful, thanks to almost 700 dedicated fans.

Here’s what’s in the Kickstarter Collection:

LOOPABLE BACKGROUND AMBIENCES
Play these on repeat when your players are in a specific location to help establish the environment and set the mood. All
of the backgrounds loop seamlessly, so you can run them for as long as your players decide to stick around.

• ABANDONED KEEP
This was once a place of sanctuary, a last resort. But that was long ago. Now it is a shattered hulk of a building, offering nothing to the weary traveler but some brief shelter from the cold wind. Local legends whisper of something dark that has taken up residence here. But this blasted ruin is home only to a murder of crows. Or is it?

“Abandoned Keep” is a background sound of a desolate outdoor location with light wind and a large group of crows nearby.

• CAVERNS
So your campaign has an underground location. The party will be miles beneath the surface for most of the adventure. Now you can let them hear what a terrible mistake they’ve made...

•Haunted Cavern: As you make your way through the dark and windy passage, you can hear the whispers of strange spirits all around you…
•Ice Cavern: The frozen walls crack, and the wooden walkway creaks in the wind. Will the ice sheets give way and bury the party in an indoor avalanche?
•Underground Sea: Deep inside the cave, the party finds a vast subterranean ocean…

• GHOST SHIP
5 December, Moderate gales fromSWbyS and fair weather, though
cold. Came across a derelict ship 200 leagues from port. She was still
under full sail but with no crew aboard. Sails tattered, ship yawing
slightly. We boarded to investigate and while we found a full cargo
hold, all staterooms and cabins were empty. There was no one aboard.
So ends. – Captain’s Log, HMS Browne

The Mary Celeste, the HMS Resolute, the Octavius – ships mysteriously abandoned by their crew and passengers, and found adrift on the open sea. What happened? Was there a pirate attack? An undersea earthquake? Or did something decidedly less natural befall the unfortunate crew?
“Ghost Ship” is a background sound of a sailing ship adrift at sea – hull creaking, sails flapping, ship’s bell clanging softly as the ship lists from side to side.

• DWARF SHIP
Thick black smoke trails behind the Dwarven ship as its primitive motor propels it across the waves. The huge steam engine, which drives two large paddles at the back of the vessel, gives off the smell of whatever the Dwarves are burning for fuel at the moment – sometimes wood, sometimes coal, sometimes much more disgusting things.

“Dwarf Ship” is a background sound of a Dwarven ship, with a sputtery primitive steam engine, creaks of the wooden hull, wave sounds and water splashing onto the deck.

• SIRENS
the Sirens will sing his mind away on their sweet meadow
lolling. There are bones of dead men rotting in a pile
beside them and flayed skins shrivel around the spot. Steer
wide; keep well to seaward; plug your oarsmen’s
ears with beeswax kneaded soft; none of the rest
should hear that song.
But if you wish to listen, let the men tie you in the
lugger, hand and foot, back to the mast, lashed to
the mast, so you may hear those harpies’ thrilling
voices;
shout as you will, begging to be untied, your crew
must only twist more line around you and keep
their stroke up, till the singers fade. – The Odyssey
You’ve reached that most treacherous part of your voyage:
you’re passing the rocky coast where the Sirens sing their song.
Will you and your crew sail past safely? Or will you steer
towards the sound and see your ship dashed on the rocks?

“Sirens” is a background sound of the mythical song of the Sirens – an unearthly keen that lures sailors to their deaths – along with lapping waves and the creak of a wooden ship’s hull and the occasional ring of the ship’s bell.

• FANTASY BATTLE
The army of men have made camp by the river. The Orc drums
can be heard in the distance. Battle will be joined soon. The
soldiers watch the dark forest with unease. Suddenly the Orcs
erupt out of the tangle of woods. The battle has come sooner
than expected...

From our “BATTLES” set, the Fantasy Battle is a huge and furious conflict with hundreds of combatants, attacking each other mercilessly with swords, arrows, catapults and magic.

* DRONES & ATMOSPHERICS
A blasted heath. An alien planet. Cyberspace. A distant moon orbiting a dead world. The End of Time. Sometimes you don’t need a specific ambience. Sometimes you just want there to be something…ambient. A background, an atmosphere, a drone.

Drones & Atmospherics Volume One includes two six-minute creepy mood-setting drones.

* Haunted Drone: an electronic hum supports random bursts of
mystic energy that drift back and forth across an unearthly
abyss.
* The Ruins Drone: A wasted land? A devastated planet? The slow
song of a dead people drifts across the shattered sky.

Drones & Atmospherics Volume Two is a fifteen-minute creepy tone with whispers and screams, perfect for when the party is exploring that old scary house.

• VILLAGE
From our groundbreaking “Game Masters Collection Volume Three: Fantasy” (remastered and lengthened for this package). A small village, a calm morning. The smith is hard at work, villagers move to and fro on their daily errands, sheep and chickens go about their business, and the occasional horse trots by. It’s pretty idyllic, really. Surely nothing bad could happen here…

of that bad die roll…

• TRAPS

• Chest Trap - Acid spray
The good news is the party just found a treasure chest. The bad news is that runny nose the elf just got is not from a cold...
• Floor Trap - Crossbow bolt fired
A stone pressure plate fires a crossbow bolt into the room.
Perfect for temple defense!

REVIEWS OF TOXIC BAG SOUNDS

“A pretty creepy collection…Made the hair on my neck stand on end…a must have!” –Brian’s Small Press Picks, Knights
of the Dinner Table

“…guaranteed to make them jump…would be a “sound” addition to your GM’s bag of tricks.” –GameTime magazine
“Every hero needs theme music, and now even the lowliest dungeon-crawler can have some…just the right sound for just
the right moment. Diehard game masters – the kind who have painted miniatures for every adventure and spend considerable
time assembling props for their games – are going to love this collection.” –Kenneth Newquist, SciFi.com
“Are you one of those DMs who can mimic a fabulous array of voices and make convincing sound effects during the
game? Me neither. For those of us with a limited vocal range, Toxic Bag Productions has come to the rescue with a series
of sound effects for your roleplaying campaign.” –Dragon #284

--Brian’s Small Press Picks, Knights of the Dinner Table October 2002

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
