Racial Profiles: The Tavi

Racial Profiles presents a new playable PC race in both Pathfinder RPG and 5th Edition mechanics.

About this Book

The tavi are a mongoose-like people about the size of halflings. They are often nomadic travelers who enjoy the freedom of the open road, rarely staying long in one place. They have a wanderlust for new locales and people, partly driven by an unquenchable love of new experiences, and partly motivated by a need to find and kill their nemeses: snakes and races with strong ties to snakes.

Tavi think of their friends as their "pack" and form powerful bonds with their adventuring cohorts, often taking measures necessary to protect their packmates.

This book includes:

  • The story of Rikki-tikki-tavi for those unfamiliar with the Rudyard Kipling classic.
  • Two pages of ecology and personality information written by Gwendolyn Kestrel.
  • Mechanics for creating tavi player characters in both Pathfinder and 5th Edition rule systems.
  • Alternate racial traits for Pathfinder tavi PCs.
  • Favored class options for all Pathfinder Core classes.
  • One racial subtype (the "Meerka") in both PFRPG and 5e rules.
  • 4 new 5th Edition feats of interest to Tavi PCs (Alertness, Danger Sense, Fleet, and Lookout)
  • 3 new 5th Edition (5e) spells of interest to Tavi PCs (burrowsacred watch, and soilslip).

Design by John Reyst with editing, development and layout by Troy Daniels and cover art by Bramasta Aji.

Thanks for the review/comments! I'm the publisher of the book and wrote much of it (the mechanics that is). I agree the Musk ability is too strong as written. I've altered it to be nauseated 1 round, and an additional 1d4 rounds of sickened. I also removed the blank pages from the end and moved the graphic for the 5th Edition Feats book (by TPK Games) to be more clear that it's not just an ad but the source of the feats listed on that page. Thanks again and I've updated the book with the fixes here and at the Open Gaming Store.

Before I comment on some of the things about this product, I want to mention that I picked up this product over at the Open Gaming Store because of a promotion earlier last week but I find it more comfortable to comment here (plus I have an actual account here) for whatever reason (better layout, I suppose).

Anyways, this is not a review per se, but rather questions that I have for the authors/designers/developers/editors of this product. First and foremost, why did you spend 10 pages of this product on reprinting one of the most easily accessible stories (Rikki Tikki Tavi from the Jungle Book, by Rudyard Kipling) in the public domain? It took me less than 15 seconds to find an online reproduction of the story. I understand that you may want to familiarize your customers with the story but I felt it wholly unnecessary and essentially wasteful (in fact, I felt like I was charged for this as part of my purchase).

That being said, it was my fault for skimming the product description as...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
