The Stuff of Nightmares (Level 18 PCs)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

For a level 18 party!

The party finds all of the inhabitants of the city Nolann Cobb have mysteriously fallen into a horrid, wake-less slumber. These sleepers writhe and recoil, plagued by haunting dreams, and no disturbance is strong enough to rouse them from this state. What’s more, a shrouded black tower has inexplicably erected itself in the middle of the city, its walls seem to warp and distort as the party approaches!

The heroes will need to unravel the mystery within the foreboding tower if they’re to save the city and wake its residents, but such a task is easier said than done. Within its black walls they will have to confront their deepest fears, for the stuff of nightmares await all who enter.

Author Dan Coleman has been a Dungeon Master for two decades now, first picking up the dice with second edition. He can tell you what THAC0 stands for, a first level fighter's saving throw against rods, staves, and wands, and why players get excited to find "Treasure Type H."

Since then he's been through every new edition, and has written custom classes, spells, items, adventures, and system mods for each. By day he's a humble graphic designer and illustrator, but by night he's a full time role-player and game designer.

SPOILER: A lot of the monsters in this use fear-based effects. I ran this with one of the party a Paladin at 17th, and it was fine. But had the paladin been the recommended 18th level and had their Aura of Courage at 30 feet, covering most or all of the party in every encounter, it would have been a very different experience and I would have had to do some serious revisions to keep it challenging.

Somnil's sleep spell felt like it should be an ongoing, oppressive cloud hanging over the city, so I added a mechanic for that: DC19 Wis check or fall asleep upon entering the city or after every long rest. Doing so adds additional flavor/reasons to "save the city." Every group with an interest in the city (The King, a parent thieve's guild, merchant consortiums, Faerunian Factions, etc) will want to do something about this situation and may have already taken measures to remedy it, only to fail. Perhaps our heroes will come across a bloody scene where investigating soldiers were ripped to shreds by the oni. Or, maybe, one lucky soul of another adventuring party has survived, so far, and is gibbering with terror and sleep deprivation, trying vainly to escape. DMs can have fun with this idea to build atmosphere.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
