The Fate Codex - Volume 2, Issue 4

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Fate Codex is a mostly-monthly e-zine featuring Quick Start Adventures and more for the Fate roleplaying system. The project, funded through Patreon, grows and swells as more patrons support our work. We've been lucky to have lots of folks pledge, and we're now entering our second year of production!

Our backers have enabled us to not only hire great authors, but also to include great art in every issue. Issue 4 of Volume 2 features Mike Mumah and Juan Ochoa! There's some great work in this piece and over 10,000 words of awesome Fate content, ready to be thrown into your next game of Fate.

Now we're bringing this content to you on DriveThruRPG, so you can find and download your issues easily. Since every title is saved to your library on the site, you'll always have The Fate Codex right at hand when you need it.

In this second issue of Volume 2, we've got:

  • Tara Zuber's essay on using flashbacks in Fate to create character backstory and engaging scenes called "I Remember When...": Using Flashbacks in Fate.
  • Travis Scott's piece on rethinking the roll of skills, Under the Hood, an essay that challenges what we think skills ought to do for a game of Fate.
  • Mike Olson's essay, Stunts are Cool, that summarize what he's learned about writing stunts in the process of developing Atomic Robo and other Fate products.
  • Jon Peacock's quick start adventure, Family Matters, a madcap adventure that features ghosts angling to control a family's future through their chosen heirs.

Huge thanks to our great production team--Josh Yearsley, Sally Christensen, Amanda Valentine, Shelley Harlan, and Thomas Deeny--for keeping us on task for this issue and pushing this thing forward. We hope you enjoy it!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
